Tooth decay is caused by acids produced by bacteria in dental plaque from sugars in the foods we eat. Tooth decay is not always painful but left unchecked a cavity will develop trapping more bacteria and food. As the decay progresses the more likely it is to cause tooth ache and infection which can result in an abscess and eventual tooth loss.
With regular dental check ups tooth decay can be treated early before the tooth tissue is destroyed.
However tooth decay is preventable with a good oral care routine and sensible dietary habits.
For healthy teeth and gums follow these simple rules:
- Brush your teeth and gums twice every day; at night and at one other time in the day. Adults should clean between teeth for healthy gums.
- Use fluoride toothpaste to strengthen tooth enamel.
- Adults, teenagers and children 3 years and over require 1350 - 1500ppm (parts per million) Fluoride while children under 3 need no less than 1000ppm Fluoride. Look on the ingredients list on the tube.
- Do not rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash after brushing is complete, just spit out the excess paste. This allows the teeth to absorb the fluoride.
- Limit foods and drinks which contain sugar to mealtimes. Try not to have food or drinks containing sugar more than four times each day.
- Keep snacks sugar free.
- Water and milk are the only tooth friendly drinks between meals.
- Eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables daily
- Limit alcohol consumption and if you smoke or use tobacco products try to stop!
- Everyone should have regular dental check-ups. Take babies by 6 months of age and make friends with your dentist. Remember that adults who wear dentures or no longer have their own teeth should still have dental checks
- Your Dentist will check your teeth and mouth for tooth decay, gum problems and oral cancers and can give advice on taking care of your mouth.
