Christmas injury or illness? 'Tis the season to choose well'

Undercooked turkeys, faulty fairy lights or too much festive tipple combined with a kitchen full of hot pans and sharp knives - Christmas can bring a cocktail of hidden dangers.

If people do suffer a merry mishap or are struck down with a winter illness, NHS Kent and Medway wants to make sure they choose wisely over the festive season.

With many NHS services closing or offering reduced hours over Christmas and New Year, people are urged to stock up on over-the-counter remedies in advance and if they are ill or injured, make sure they use the appropriate service. People should also make sure they have enough prescription medication to see them through Christmas and New Year holidays.

Dr Robert Stewart, Medical Director at NHS Kent and Medway, said: “Traditionally at this time of year too many people wrongly visit A&E when they could get quicker, more appropriate treatment elsewhere.

"Pharmacists can help with coughs, colds, upset stomachs and flu, minor injuries units can treat cuts, minor burns and sprains and strains and NHS Direct has qualified nurses available to give you any health advice."

"Pharmacists can help with coughs, colds, upset stomachs and flu, minor injuries units can treat cuts, minor burns and sprains and strains and NHS Direct has qualified nurses available to give you any health advice. Many winter illnesses can also be effectively treated with self-care in your own home, by making sure you have a well-stocked medicine cabinet and get plenty of rest.

“By choosing the right service, people will make sure A&E and out-of-hours GPs are available for those who urgently need them over Christmas.”
