New deaf service comes to Medway

A valuable new service is starting for Medway residents who are deaf and whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL).

Currently, people who need this service have to travel to Maidstone.

From Friday, 24 June, BSL users who need counselling will be able to attend sessions with a trained counsellor in their own language.

The signed sessions will be held at Balmoral Gardens Healthy Living Centre, Balmoral Road, Gillingham ME7 4BA. This building is already known by and is accessible to sign language users. It’s also just around the corner from the Medway Deaf Club.

The sessions will be provided by the National Deaf Services, which is a specialist mental health service for people whose first language is BSL. Initially the sessions will be held monthly, but it is hoped that as the service becomes better known, it will become fortnightly.
