Spring into action – It’s International Fitness Week

People across the South East are being encouraged to put a spring in their step and get active as part of International Fitness Week.

Dr Gabriel Scally, Director of Public Health for NHS South of England said: “Now that the weather is warming up and our winter woollies can be thrown to the back of wardrobe it is the perfect time to get in shape. Think of this as an opportunity to spring clean your health and fitness routine as well as your home.

“Now that the evenings are lighter dust off your trainers and go for a brisk walk in the park after work. Or, dig out your old bike from the back of the garage and stop just talking about cycling to work.”

“It is all too easy to find an excuse not to exercise, let’s use International Fitness Week as an excuse to exercise.”

The annual event is being run in association with a national gym company and fronted by former Spice Girl Mel B. Sport Relief is also backing the efforts to get us all moving more as part of its 2012 activities.

Here are a few simple things that most of us could do be fitter and healthier:

  • Take the stairs and not the lift
  • Leave the car at home and walk more
  • Eat five-a-day – increase the amount of fruit and vegetable that we eat
  • Drink less alcohol - have booze-free days every week
  • Go swimming – if you haven’t exercised for a while it’s the perfect way to get started

The NHS’s ‘Your Health, Your Choices’ campaign provides lots of practical ideas to increase physical activity and improve health.
