Core Standards Declaration for 2009/10
The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. Their aim is to make sure better care is provided for everyone, whether that’s in hospital, in care homes, in people’s own homes, or elsewhere.
Safeguarding Children Assurance Statement
In July 2009 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published a report on their review of arrangements in the NHS for safeguarding children.
In line with this report NHS Medway, as commissioner of health services in Medway, has worked with the main providers to ensure that processes, procedures and policies with regard to safeguarding children are strong and effective.
NHS Medway has developed a comprehensive action plan to further develop safeguarding arrangements across in Medway. In particular, NHS Medway is assured that:
- Its main providers meet the statutory requirement with regard to criminal records bureau checks
- Child protection policies and systems are up-to-date and robust, including processes for the follow-up of children who do not attend appointments.
- Children’s safeguarding training is identified as a mandatory requirement for staff working with children and awareness training is embedded in the induction programme all new staff are required to attend. All relevant staff in Kent and Medway Partnership Trust (KMPT) and Medway Community Healthcare are up-to-date with level 1 training. Medway Maritime Foundation NHS Trust has undertaken a trust-wide comprehensive training needs analysis and a central database has been established. 99 per cent of staff eligible to undertake Safeguarding Children training at level 1 have now done so.
- The designated and named professionals for safeguarding have clearly defined roles.
- All providers of health services in Medway have an executive lead for safeguarding and safeguarding is reviewed at Board level at least annually.
The assurance statements for each NHS provider in Medway are available on their websites and can be accessed through the links below:
NHS Medway Board confirms that it has the necessary assurance that providers of health services in Medway are meeting statutory requirements and following good practice.
MRSA screening
NHS Medway is compliant with national guidelines for MRSA screening for both elective and emergency admissions and has received assurances from our three main providers.

Patients who are screened positive for MRSA on admission to hospital and discharged before MRSA therapy can be commenced, are routinely treated in the community by GPs.
