If you have an adult male patient who is in acute retention of urine, contact MedOCC, who will refer the patient to the Community Nurses in the usual way. The patient can then be seen within two hours by a community nurse in their own home or meet the nurse at a local clinic for catheterisation.
The document below outlines the complete pathway.
If the nurse experiences any difficulties during the catheterisation, he/she can refer the patient directly to the urology team at MFT.
The community nurse will advise the patient’s GP of the treatment, requesting a prescription for an alpha blocking drug. The community nurse will also arrange, as per the pathway, a date for a TWOC (Trial Without Catheter), which can also be done in the patient’s home.
If the TWOC is successful, the patient will need to be reviewed by their GP and a PSA test and PR exam performed.
If the TWOC is unsuccessful, the patient will need to be referred by their GP for a urology outpatients appointment.
