Gynaecology outpatient toolkit

This toolkit is designed to support GPs when considering making a referral to gynaecology outpatients in secondary care (Medway Foundation Trust or The Spire, Alexander).

This toolkit has been updated to inculde information about both cancer and non-cancer referrals.

As confirmed at the GP monthly meeting in September 2011, this is not a new referral pathway or referral form. Referrals will still be made in the usual way, through Choose and Book (where there will also be a link to this guide) or via GP letter.

The toolkit now identifies gynaecology conditions by symptom and where patients can be referred for a ‘one-stop shop process’ in outpatients, this symptom is marked with the "#" symbol.

The toolkit identifies any tests or diagnostics that need to be undertaken prior to referral. This will help both you, in the decision of whether to refer the patient and also the patient, so that they can benefit from the one-stop process and therefore not require an additional follow up appointment.

Secondary care (MFT and The Spire) will take referrals that are suitable for a one-stop process from Monday 14th November 2011.

Note: If you have undertaken all the agreed tests/diagnostics for the referred condition and secondary care does not treat the patient for the referred symptom in a one-stop process, you will not be charged for a follow-up appointment. Equally, if you have not organised the required tests/diagnostics and therefore secondary care is not able to treat the patient through a one-stop process, secondary care will be entitled to charge for follow up appointments.
