Infectious diseases screening in pregnancy

All pregnant women are offered the opportunity to be screened for Hepatitis B, HIV, syphilis and rubella as part of routine midwifery care.

For women who are found to be susceptible to rubella, two doses of MMR in the postnatal period are required to offer protection.

Midwives at Medway Foundation NHS Trust are now offering the first MMR dose immediately after delivery. GP practices have the responsibility of providing the second dose one month later as per Green Book guidance.

If one of your patients receives a first MMR vaccination, the midwifery discharge summary will inform you of this, and of your responsibility to offer the second vaccination. Women will be requested to approach the practice themselves a month later for the second vaccination.
